I visited a family member in the hospital last week and rode the elevator with a 4-foot robot with arms, its circular blue eye pixels blinking at me. My first instinct was to say "excuse me" as I walked by it, or smile as I would to any other stranger. But this stranger, made of metal and code, didn't seem particularly interested in pleasantries.
Surreal to say the least.
That small moment captured exactly what so many of us are feeling right now: curiosity mixed with trepidation. For those of us whose careers revolve around ideas, storytelling, and communication, this shift can feel deeply personal.
Every morning now begins the same way for many of us in marketing, communications, and creative work. We open our laptops, launch our favorite AI tool, and somewhere between the first prompt and response, a question rises as an undercurrent running through so many of us right now.
Am I spending all this time and energy training my replacement?
It’s an uncomfortable tension. And pretending it doesn’t exist doesn’t help anyone.
