The U.S. IT channel is at its biggest inflection point in two decades. MSP-born providers run at 20 to 30 percent net margin while legacy VARs hover at two to five percent, vendors are tying MDF to provable ROI, and AI is resetting the cost of delivery.
That is the short version of MarketDesign Co.'s State of the Industry 2027 report, Competing in the New IT Channel. We built it as a field guide for CEOs, sales leaders, marketing leaders, and service + operations leaders who already feel the ground moving and want a clear next step.
The report pairs published research from Forrester, Gartner, Deloitte, McKinsey, and others with anonymized 2025 portfolio benchmarks from MDCo engagements, including our own firm. Every section ends with moves you can make this quarter. Here is what's inside, and why it matters for your 2027 plan.
Five forces are redefining the channel: margin compression, the MDF accountability shift, AI as the new operating layer, differentiation moving from claims to proof, and sales + marketing alignment becoming structural. Each one rewards firms that systematize first.
Hardware margins of two to five percent can no longer support legacy delivery models, and the growth has moved to recurring, service-led categories. Deloitte flags cybersecurity, cloud optimization, AI enablement, and lifecycle management as the growth areas, and every one of them rewards the provider who packages an outcome.
The report's profitability view, drawn from Deloitte and Bain 2025 research and triangulated with MDCo engagements, shows the spread clearly:
Business Model |
Avg.e Net Margin |
Growth Outlook |

+18% |
|
Hybrid VAR/MSP |

Private equity has noticed. Investors are paying premiums for regional firms with documented delivery, recurring revenue above half of total, and a named vertical where they win.
Yes. Gartner forecasts that most vendor programs will tie market development funds directly to provable ROI by 2027, and fewer than one in three partners can connect MDF activity to closed revenue today. Funding will flow to the partners who can trace it.
Focus pays off here too. The report's MDF ROI index peaks at 145 for partners with three to five strategic alliances and drops to 67 for partners spread across nine or more.
AI is now the operating layer for productivity, pricing, and the customer relationship. Research by Brynjolfsson, Li, and Raymond in the Quarterly Journal of Economics found AI assistance raised customer-support productivity 15 percent on average, with the largest gains among less experienced workers.
That makes AI a coaching layer first. The firms seeing results start with a single repetitive problem, such as help-desk routing or meeting summaries, set guardrails before they scale, and reinvest the saved hours in client experience.
Buyers are risk-averse and skeptical of familiar promises like "trusted partner" and "best in class." Forrester's research found 86 percent of B2B purchases stall during the buying process and 81 percent of buyers express dissatisfaction with the provider they chose.
The partners who win lead with evidence: documented outcomes, depth in two or three vertical markets, and operational metrics like uptime, cost avoided, and risk reduced. Kara Rudy, Founder + CEO of MarketDesign Co., puts it plainly in the report: "If your differentiation sounds like everyone else's, you don't have one. You have camouflage."
Eighty percent of the buying process now happens before sales is in the room, and 6Sense data indicates roughly four out of five vendors are already on the shortlist by day one of a formal evaluation. Misaligned teams lose deals they never knew were active.
Aberdeen Group research cited in the report links tight alignment to roughly 38 percent higher win rates and 36 percent higher customer retention. The fix is one revenue office: one calendar, one number, and one scoreboard both teams own.
P.A.T.H. is how MarketDesign works: Purpose, Accountability, Technology, and Human. In the report, each pillar takes on one structural shift and ends with the moves to make this quarter.
Pillar |
The Shift |
Where to Start |
|---|---|---|
|
Purpose |
From camouflage to clarity |
Pick two or three vertical markets and capture customer results right after delivery |
|
Accountability |
The new MDF math |
Audit every funded activity from the last 12 months and consolidate to three to five strategic alliances |
|
Technology |
Portfolios that win |
Triage every product, license, and service with the Four-Quadrant Profit Matrix |
|
Human |
AI is the engine; trust is the fuel |
Set guardrails, build an AI fluency baseline for every role, and reinvest saved time in clients |
The pillars work as one system. Purpose gives the strategy shape, accountability keeps it honest, technology gives it scale, and the human pillar makes it real. Growth isn't an accident. It's a system.
The report pairs each industry shift with a real, anonymized MDCo engagement. Four results stand out:

We test everything on ourselves first. In 2026, MDCo turned on AEO inside its own HubSpot and restructured its content so answer engines could read and cite it. Five prospects have since found MDCo through AI search and said so on the first call. The report shows how we did it.
The report is written for leaders at technology companies selling through or into the U.S. IT channel. Part 04 gives each role its own plan:
The report is organized in four parts. Part 01 sets up the story and the data. Part 02 reads the market segment by segment across VARs, OEMs, distribution, MSPs, and solution integrators. Part 03 walks the four P.A.T.H. pillars plus one revenue office. Part 04 is your seat at the table.
You also get three tools to take into your next leadership meeting: the P.A.T.H. scorecard to rate your organization, the Four-Quadrant Profit Matrix for portfolio triage, and a 90-day worksheet to commit your team to one shared number.
The shift from product resale to recurring, service-led revenue. MSP-born providers run at 20 to 30 percent net margin versus two to five percent for legacy VARs, and investors pay premiums for firms with predictable recurring revenue.
MSP-born providers average 20 to 30 percent net margin, hybrid VAR/MSP firms 10 to 15 percent, and legacy VARs two to five percent, based on Deloitte and Bain 2025 research triangulated with MDCo engagements.
Gartner forecasts that most vendor programs will tie MDF directly to provable ROI by 2027. Today, fewer than one in three partners can connect MDF activity to closed revenue.
Published research found AI assistance increased customer-support productivity 15 percent on average, with the largest gains among less experienced workers.
AEO structures your content so AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini can find, cite, and recommend you. In MDCo's 2025 reporting, AI referrals were small in volume but the best-converting digital source by rate at two of four clients measured.
